Our Local Environment – Compare & Contrast

10 Mar

Our Eastbrook School Reception class have spent time in our local environment this term, comparing and contrasting the different areas of Dagenham.

First, students enjoyed a walk around their locality to explore what facilities were needed for a busy town like ours. Whilst out, they noticed lots of housing, a variety of shops and restaurants, a gym, our local football ground, a police station, excellent transport links and even some exciting new Film & TV recording studios!

Then the class completed their second local walk to explore a contrasting part of Dagenham. This time we turned right out of school and headed towards Eastbrookend Country Park. Students were quick to notice the vast difference between their surroundings on this journey, compared to the busier areas that we visited last week. Learners used their senses to observe and notice what they could see and hear, including vast open green spaces, lots of trees, wildlife and habitats and, at times, hearing total silence. Students were introduced to the term 'rural' and almost the entire class stated that they preferred this more rural environment. We ended the walk at our final destination of Eastbrookend play area after noticing the community orchard, visitor centre and cafe. I have a feeling that our Reception friends and families will become frequent visitors to this local gem!
