Sociology

At Eastbrook School, students are nurtured to see the application of Sociology as relevant and ‘alive’ in action. The subject plays a crucial role in providing students with a huge repertoire of key terms and wider subject knowledge, including sociological perspectives and researched evidence, to facilitate analysis of social issues that affect people locally, nationally and around the world. We encourage and support students to use their knowledge to build pathways to academic success, and find the relevance to other subjects, thus empowering them to see the realms of possibilities and the urge to effect change.

We strive to have confident learners who use their transferable skills, written and verbal communication and interpretation of data, to critically analyse, explore and debate contemporary social issues. As such, they will be better placed to challenge taken‐for‐granted assumptions and question their everyday understanding of the social phenomena. Each section of the EDUQAS’ specification is connected and interrelated which makes it easier for students’ to have a deeper understanding of the subject. Furthermore, students’ comments reflect an appreciation of the specification as it provides contexts for Eastbrook’s PROUD habits and British values, including tolerance, democracy and rule of law, that help us to function in contemporary British society. We practice a socio constructionists’ approach, to teaching and learning, which, through discussions, support teachers and students working collaboratively to access deeper understanding of Sociology and develop students’ analytical, assimilation and communication skills before making reasoned arguments and conclusions about social issues we all encounter in our communities.
