Design and Technology

Students are taught to combine design and making skills with knowledge and understanding to tackle a range of design briefs.  Students are encouraged to avoid design fixation and be open to considering a variety of solutions and acting on constructive criticism of their ideas. Often students will face setbacks when designing and making, and our curriculum aims to instil resilience in students. To this end we are explicit in making students understand that there can be many iterations of an idea before a working solution is developed. Students are taught to design and make in a disciplined and rigorous manner, testing and evaluating ideas as part of the design process.

We are conscious that developments in Design and Technology are ever changing and that transferrable skills are vital if students are to thrive in their future working lives. We teach students how to problem solve and to take risks, and as they progress further up the school, we expect design ideas to become more creative and challenging.

Overall, we aim to produce global citizens who design and make products in a creative, innovative and socially responsible way, understanding the wider impact of their activities.
