Eastbrook hosts Iftar

23 Apr

Eastbrook School hosted its annual community Iftar with a twist this year. Our Key Stage 4 students showcased how fasting isn’t just something that Muslims do during the month of Ramadan. Other religious groups fast as well and this year Lent for Christians and Passover for Jews happen to fall within the same time!

If you’re not sure what Ramadan is, it is a month where you cleanse yourself through fasting, give to charity and put yourselves in the shoes of the less fortunate.

Students put up a display of all other faiths who fast and the school gathered together, discussing these different religious views of fasting. For Christians, the lead up time to Easter is Lent, a time of sadness and repentance as Jesus was crucified. For Jews, Passover is a time of remembrance when the people of Israel were enslaved during the reign of Pharoah in Egypt, and a first born children fast to commemorate being saved from the plagues. The only religion that does not fast and isn’t allowed to is Sikhism.

One student who fasted for Lent, said: “I gave up junk food and fizzy drinks, because I wanted to challenge myself to become healthier.” Students who fasted for Ramadan, said they wanted to be closer to God and have an opportunity to reap the rewards.

Our school Iftar, when Muslims break their fast, was organised by Mr Ibrar and the food was generously cooked by the catering team at the school.

We are PROUD that we are a school of many faiths and diverse beliefs!
