Year 10 GCSE Historians visit to Whitechapel

11 Mar

GCSE historians took part in Eastbrook's first walking-talking tour of Whitechapel, led by members of the History department. Students had the opportunity to visit a number of sites linking to their environment study, that forms an important part of their Crime and Punishment unit. We were very fortunate that spring had arrived and the sun was out. We even managed some celeb-spotting as we bumped into a famous Arsenal footballer Riccardo Calafiori, which was an unexpected bonus to an enjoyable day out!

The students were, as always, brilliantly behaved and fantastically engaged, letting us know how much they gained from this valuable educational visit:

“Today’s visit helped us to recognise and understand the living conditions of people living in the East End of London at the end of the 19th century, and the challenges and dangers that everyday life entailed, particularly for women.”

“It was great to widen our understanding of the lives of the victims of Jack the Ripper beyond the heinous murders, and appreciate the varied and complex lives of those women in the lead up to their deaths in Whitechapel, 1888.”

A big thank you to Mr Hewitt for his organisation of the trip, the staff involved, and to all the Year 10 historians for being a credit to our school and department – we are PROUD!
