Meltdown in the Classroom - Year 4 Investigate Climate Change

13 Mar

This week, our Year 4 scientists took part in an exciting hands-on experiment to explore the effects of climate change and global warming. As part of Science Week, the children set up two mini glaciers using ice and rocks, mimicking the frozen landscapes of the world’s polar regions.

To test the impact of rising global temperatures, warm water was poured onto one of the glaciers, representing the effects of climate change. The results were striking—while one glacier remained mostly frozen, the other rapidly melted before the children’s eyes. By the end of the school day, most of the second glacier had disappeared, while the untouched one remained frozen outside!

Through this engaging experiment, our young scientists observed the changing state of matter as ice transformed into water and saw firsthand how rising temperatures can accelerate glacial melting. This practical demonstration helped deepen their understanding of climate change’s impact on the world’s glaciers and the consequences for global sea levels.

The children were amazed by their findings, sparking thoughtful discussions about the importance of protecting our planet.
