At Eastbrook Pimary we believe that the best way to ensure that pupils do well in English is to ensure that they become life-long engaged readers.
Children and staff at Eastbrook are enthusiastic readers and we endeavour to foster a love and passion for reading in our children from the outset. To this end, we focus throughout the year on encouraging and developing a passion for reading. We also ensure that teachers make regular recommendations to pupils to encourage reading for pleasure. Pupils also have a chance to talk to their teachers weekly about their reading habits.
Reading is taught through the Read, Write Inc phonics programme in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and where appropriate in Key Stage 2. Once children are reading fluently, they move onto the Bug Club programme, which focuses on comprehension skills. We place a heavy emphasis on home reading.
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics based programme which helps children learn to read whilst also developing a wide range of vocabulary and encouraging a love of stories. It was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at www.ruthmiskin.com.
Who is Read Write Inc. for?
The Read Write Inc. programme is for primary school children learning to read. Children will begin the programme in Reception class and will remain on the programme until they are reading with fluency.
How does it work at Eastbrook?
In Reception children will be taught a sound a day and will be assessed regularly by their class teacher. When they have reached an appropriate level they will be grouped according to their reading level, and will start reading and writing alongside learning the new sounds.
In Years One and Two, all children will be assessed regularly by their class teacher. The children will complete reading and writing activities each day, grouped according to their reading level. Children will be grouped according to their stage not their age, so classes will be mixed and taught by different teachers/teaching assistants.
